We need to catch up on our travels! We left off with Utah. Can't forget to tell you about the great state of Nevada, and what it was like to get to Leo and Thelma Baker in Reno.
We made a conscious decision to use US 50 (The Loneliest Road in America) to get between southern Utah and Reno. We could have gone north to I 80, but on the map, it looked way out of our way. Can't say we regret traveling US 50, it was an experience. Nothing went wrong. This route was certainly, if nothing else, a test of Rog's driving skills. He did just fine. US 50 is flat, curvy, hilly, mountainous, desert and deserted highway all in one. Steep inclines and descents, as well as narrow stretches. We won't bore you with a lot of pictures, but here's a few so you can get a taste of it. I think however it needs to be experienced personally for the full effect.
We drove through these mountains.
See how straight and long the road is...
US 50 crosses 600 miles in Nevada. After 300 miles we spent two nights in Ely, Nevada. Nice town, with fuel and restaurants and of course casinos. The second 300 miles we only saw 1 town. I didn't even catch the name of it, but here are some pics.
Lonely, isn't it.
The bar was open...
Finally, we ended up on I 80 just a few miles to the east of Sparks, Nevada. We stayed at the Sparks Marina RV Park for 4 nights while visiting Leo and Thelma. Great park, would definitely stay here again.
We had a great time with our friends, went out to eat, played cards and even took a day trip to Lake Tahoe.

Look how clear this water is!
Absolutely gorgeous!
We drove most of the way around the lake, stopped quite a few times for pictures and lunch.
Check out these shots from Eagle waterfall.
Amazing and very powerful.
Now, look close to the center of the picture. See the man sitting on the cliff with the hat? That's Rog, he thinks he's a mountain goat. I was holding my breath, almost couldn't take this picture. He certainly got some great pictures.
Here are some other shots from two other locations around the lake.
We even took time for a nice hike.
Leo and Thelma on the bridge over the waterfall.
We had a great time with them. We look forward to seeing them again in September when they come back to Indiana.
As we said, we are in Oregon now, staying at Beverly Beach State Park, north of Newport. Headed to Fort Stevens State park close to Astoria tomorrow. We will try to do another post tomorrow or the next day and catch you up on the beauty that is the Oregon coast.
